Year 2 News - Mrs Lockyer

Who wants to eat a rotten apple?

In this semester's Design and Technology unit, students have been exploring how technology is used in the kitchen. They are investigating technologies used to ensure the safe handling of food. In week 6 we became busy little Food Technologists to investigate how food is stored and preserved. First we had a class discussion to predict which apple would take the longest to go rotten. We then set up 3 bowls using apples, water and honey water and left them for 30 minutes. Many of us were not surprised to discover that the apple exposed to the air went rotten the quickest and the apple covered in honey water kept the food preserved for longer. Some of us loved the smell of the honey water and wanted to know which other foods could be preserved. In our next lesson, we will explore what happens to food after it leaves the farm and before it gets to your kitchen and ask ... what exactly is a food processor?
