Principal Report

Catholic Education Week

Last week, we celebrated Catholic Education Week with the theme ‘Arise and Go’. We celebrated Saint Mary of the Cross Mackillop, Australia’s very own saint. Her feast day is celebrated on the 8th August each year. Saint Mary Mackillop set up schools in South Australia responding to educate the poor and marginalised children.  ‘Arise and Go’ suggests we should go out and follow in the footsteps of Jesus and saints like Mary Mackillop. Mary Mackillop’s motto of 'never see a need without doing something about it' continues to call us forth to action.

Our Catholic Education Week celebrations commenced with a Mass for students from our schools at Marist Regional College in Burnie. Led by Father John Girdauskas and concelebrated by Father Amal Devados, these regional events provide a unique opportunity for students to gather together in celebration of our faith. Key members of the community who celebrated alongside our staff and students included Sister Josephine Brady RSJ. We thank Mrs Catherine Dunn for assisting in the organisation of events for the week. The Sausage Sizzle was organised and cooked by Mrs Tameika Anthony, Mrs Catherine Dunn, Ms Erin Moore and Mr David Angliss. We would like to extend a special thanks to Morse’s Butchery who supplied the sausages and gave us a special discount.

Science Fair

This Friday 18th August, our year 5 students will be hosting a Science Fair to celebrate Science Week. The students have been planning some great experiments for all our classes to explore throughout the day in scheduled sessions. All parents are invited to visit the Science Fair from 2:10 - 2:40 p.m. where you will be amazed and challenged with the experiments. We thank Ms Elodie Woodcock for organising and working with the students in planning this great event. The Science Fair will be held instead of an assembly this week.

Chocolate Winterfest

Last Sunday, some of our year 5 and 6 students entered the Nestle Decorated Cupcake Competition at the Axeman’s Hall of Fame. Congratulations to the following students who were awarded places for their entries: Melia Sesara, 2nd place; Chloe Anthony, 3rd place; and Ruby Warren, equal 4th place. Well done to all students who entered. Thank you to Ms Erin Moore who organised and supported students with their amazing entries!

This is an invitation to attend Mass at St Patrick’s Catholic Church Latrobe

Mass Times

Wednesday Mass: 9:30am Latrobe

Sunday Mass: 5:00 p.m. Latrobe

Since we are all called to share in this “Bread of Life”, anyone is welcome to attend Mass at a Roman Catholic Church, and if you so choose, take steps towards becoming a Catholic, even if you are not a Christian. Church attendance is both obligatory and beneficial; public worship allows everyone to come together to strengthen our faith and community. It helps you to lead a Christ centred life. When this happens, you may notice changes in your life. Many have experienced an unbelievable shifting of life circumstances, while others have found the strength and grace to move forward in spite of obstacles and struggles. If you haven’t been to church for a while or have never been; you are welcome to “Come and See.”

In the Roman Catholic Church, we have what are called sacraments. There are seven of which the first is baptism. You can talk to the Priest, Father Jaison or Father Steven to learn more about the sacraments. They are usually available before or after Mass or you can even call a Parish and make an appointment. It’s important to point out that in order to receive Holy Communion, an individual had to have been baptised and properly prepared. It may seem a bit overwhelming at first, but don’t be discouraged. It is also important to Pray. We do this by praising God and asking him for guidance in all we do. “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks, receives; and the one who seeks, finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.” Matthew 7:78

But Nathanael said to him, “Can anything good come from Nazareth? ”Philip said to him, “Come and see.” John 1:46

Have a great week!
