In Year Six this term one of the subject areas we have worked on a lot has been History, with a specific focus on migration to Australia. Students have learnt about the different reasons that push or pull people to migrate as well as some of the policies Australia has had over the last 200 years that have also influenced migration patterns. Some of the tasks students have engaged well in have been;
- Creating a family tree that focused on where family members were born and exploring any stories of migration within their own family
- Creating their own suitcase that contained 4-6 significant items from home and the reasons they would take them if they were to migrate
- Creating an historical journal that tells the physical, emotional and cultural journey of a migrant coming to Australia during the past 200 years
Students were also lucky enough to secure their Leavers jumpers before the end of term and eagerly wore them with pride.
This term has flown by! In Religion, we have explored units on Prayer, Lent, Holy Week and God. Our English this term has been focused around the novel, “War Horse” by Micheal Murpurgo. Our vocabulary and knowledge of grammar has been enriched with our weekly focus. We have explored writing at sentence level, working on sentence expansion, adding appositives and coordinating conjunctions such as; and, but, and so. Students have created narrative and persuasive texts.
In Mathematics, we have explored the multiplication and divisions algorithm with regrouping, perimeter, fact families for multiplication and division and equivalent fractions.
Our HASS unit has focused on How the colonies developed after the 1800’s, students have researched the effects of penal settlements, whaling, the Wool industry, exploration and the gold rush on the expansion of the colonies.
In Art, we have explored different sketching techniques to help us sketch an image of a horse inspired by our class novel.
Congratulations to the following students who have received Student of the Week.
